Changes to CPHS Graduate and Professional grade policy for Spring 2020 Final Grades
NOTE: the CPHS policy changes do not apply to CPHS undergraduate programs – BSCR, BSPS, and BSN all follow the university policy
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a challenge to our state, nation, and world. The entire Campbell University community has been impacted by this pandemic. Students, in particular, are facing unique and unprecedented challenges. To provide flexibility to students in these extraordinary and trying circumstances, the following final grade options are available. These grade options will apply only to Spring 2020 final grades for CPHS Graduate and Professional Programs (MS-CLNR, MS-PHSC, MS-PUBH, MPAP, DPT, PHRD) that transitioned to remote instruction on March 16, 2020. Clinical experiences, capstone courses, and curriculum blocks completed before March 16, 2020 are not eligible for this updated policy. All undergraduate (BS) programs are subject to the Main Campus UG policy (https://www.campbell.edu/registrar/alternate-grade-request/).
Students with an earned final course grade of A, B, C, or D (when available) may choose to replace it with a final course grade of S, “Satisfactory.” A recorded F will not be affected by this policy change.
A student may choose to replace earned final course grades on an individual course basis. Clinical course work, capstone courses, and courses in curriculum blocks completed before March 16, 2020 are not eligible for this updated policy.
The last day to select the S final grade option, the “decision date,” for a course is May 5, 2020, for May 2020 graduation candidates and May 8, 2020, for all other graduate and professional students. After the decision date, the S option is no longer available.
Once an earned course grade has been replaced by an S, it cannot be changed back to the traditional letter grade of A, B, C, or D.
The S option is not available for final course grades of W, I, and IC.
Courses with final grades of S will count as credit hours earned. Courses with final grades of S will accrue zero quality points per hour, thereby having a neutral effect upon grade point average. An S grade will not contribute to eligibility for Latin honors for graduation.
Before a grade of S is chosen, a student must consider the implications carefully. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with their academic advisor before choosing the S option. Certain benefits like scholarships, athletic eligibility, financial aid, tuition assistance, Veteran’s Affairs, course transfer to another institution, application and admission to graduate/professional school, applications to sit for professional licensure exams, and others might be affected or jeopardized. In certain circumstances, it may not benefit a student to use the S option. Students with Academic Performance and Standards probation or suspension or progress status of Warning, Unsatisfactory, or Appeal for financial aid purposes are strongly encouraged to consult with the Office of Financial Aid or Veterans Affairs before making any decisions about the S option. Departmental policies may influence a student’s decision. However, the choice to designate any course as an S grade and the consequences for doing so, reside with the individual student.
Regardless of your participation in the alternate grade request option, instructors will record the grade earned as they do each semester. For each course that you complete the program-specific alternate grade request form (by the established deadline mentioned above), the registrar’s office will change any A, B, C, or D grades to an S. Earned F grades will not be affected.

Yes. If you select the alternate grading option and receive a grade of S, the course will count towards all appropriate degree requirements.
S grades will not contribute to eligibility for Latin or graduation honors (cum laude, etc.) at graduation.
While there may be exceptions, the requirements for licensure are based upon credit hours completed and degree earned as verified by your college and institution; therefore, a selection of “opting in” to the grading scale of S as opposed to A, B, C, or D should have no impact on a student’s ability to apply for licensure examinations. Program academic standards, including minimum GPA, must still be satisfied.
